Late THIN LIZZY Frontman's Mother Pleads: 'Say No To Drugs'
September 23, 2005Julieann Campbell of Derry Journal has issued teh following report:
Philomena Lynott, mother of Irish rock legend, Phil Lynott, gave an impassioned talk to pupils of St. Columb's College yesterday to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs.
THIN LIZZY frontman Phil Lynott had it all — a glittering music career, homes in Dublin and London, a devoted fanbase and a devoted mother. But all that ended when Lynott died on January 4, 1985, as a result of his many years of drug abuse and hard living.
Philomena Lynott has since spent many years teaching drug awareness. During yesterday's talk, Ms. Lynott implored her young audience: "Don't let your mothers suffer like I have. I cried rivers when I lost him and I will miss him forever and a day."
Dozens of teenagers were in attendance in St. Columb's College lecture theatre to hear Lynott's mother speak fondly and with great humour of the son she misses so much.
Ms. Lynott spoke of the days and months following her son's death, when she felt "terribly ashamed and embarrassed" at how he had died. She went on: "I nearly died with him. I realised that Philip has taken his own life by taking drugs." "He's dead 20 years now, but still I've never slept a full night's sleep since I lost him. I was like his big sister on account of me being so young, and we told each other everything."
